Consultation open: Share your views on the CBD Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework
The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) is due to take place in Kunming, China next May. At COP15, governments are expected to adopt a new Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (Post-2020 Framework). The framework will be the equivalent of the Paris Climate Agreement - but for nature - and it is intended to include goals, targets and policy directions for our global society over the next three decades that will lead the way to achieving the CBD 2050 vision of “Living in Harmony with Nature”.
In August 2020, the CBD published an updated draft of the Post-2020 framework. Today, Business for Nature, a global coalition of influential organizations and forward-thinking businesses, launches a consultation inviting feedback on this draft from businesses and organizations of all sectors, sizes and geographies before 13 November.
Nature is at a tipping point. The 2019 Global IPBES Report warned that nature loss is accelerating at an unprecedented rate with 75% of the land surface significantly altered by human actions and nearly 1 million species at risk of extinction. This is putting our economies at risk. According to the World Economic Forum, over half the world’s total GDP – US$44 trillion – is moderately or highly dependent on nature and its services and, as a result, exposed to risks due to nature loss.
The latest draft of the Post-2020 Framework falls short of the ambition many leaders recently called for as part of the Leaders’ Pledge for Nature, and is unlikely to create the conditions needed to reverse nature loss in this decade.
"The outcomes from the CBD meetings next year will influence the contribution businesses are expected to make to help protect, restore and sustainably use the world’s natural resources. We urge companies to share their views through this consultation and help shape the agenda in a way that is grounded in real business and is sufficiently ambitious to achieve the level of action the biodiversity crisis demands." - Eva Zabey, Executive Director of Business for Nature.
The results from the consultation will be used to develop an official position and recommendations by Business for Nature, that reflects the voice of business, and will be shared in early 2021 ahead of CBD COP15.
