We are looking for an Operations Manager to join our impactful international team and help shape and develop Business for Nature now and in the future. This is a hands-on and visible role for a strategic thinker and planner with strong operational experience, good finance and fundraising skills with an eye for detail and the ability to understand what it takes to turn vision into action.   

We are looking for someone who is passionate about sustainability and environmental issues, has proven experience in fundraising and able to build strong relationships with funders and other stakeholders.  

We work in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment. To be successful, you need to be comfortable working autonomously, with the ability to lead projects from inception to completion.  As a small team operating across the world, you should feel comfortable working virtually.  

Title:  Operations Manager, Business for Nature coalition 

Reports to: Executive Director, Business for Nature coalition 

Term: indefinite 

Start date: ASAP, ideally 1 September 2022  

Location: We are a virtual team so you can be based anywhere providing you have the right to work there. You will need to travel occasionally. Note that national engagement is currently planned in South Africa, Colombia, India and Malaysia.

Overview 

Business for Nature is a global coalition that brings together business and conservation organizations and forward-thinking companies. By demonstrating the momentum and business action on nature, our aim is to give policymakers the courage and comfort to make ambitious agreements to adopt policies to reverse nature loss in this decade.  We’re an inclusive organization committed to looking for different talents to build a diverse and impactful team.   

BfN has been granted a Global Environment Facility (GEF) project working with Conservation International (CI)-GEF to contribute to reversing biodiversity loss through business engagement in driving policy ambition and reducing negative corporate impact, towards a nature positive world by 2030. This position will manage the GEF funded project. 

The Operations Manager will:  

Manage Business for Nature’s operations 

  • Lead, strengthen, improve and revise our governance, operations, and workplans, building on our existing systems and capturing lessons learned. 

  • Support the Executive Director in the development and implementation of Business for Nature’s medium and long-term strategy.  

  • Manage contractual agreements with suppliers and funders. 

  • Develop and maintain relevant policies and procedures in close co-operation with our host organization to ensure fair and consistent management of employees.  

  • Manage other GEF-related requirements for project implementation, monitoring and evaluation as per CI-GEF guidance. 

Develop and lead the fundraising strategy to support Business for Nature’s growth  

  • Manage Business for Nature’s financial and growth strategy working closely with the Executive Director, our legal and fiscal host (Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors) and our decision-making body.  

  • Manage BfN’s financial and operational accounting and reporting, working with RPA 

  • Engage existing funders and seek new sources of funding, assessing the risk and benefits of different funding opportunities. 

  • Oversee BfN’s results framework, including tracking monitoring and evaluation indicators and delivering reports. 

  • Manage and monitor the project safeguards plans. 

Qualifications, skills and experience: 

  • Strong organizational, project and time management skills including a capacity to track details and manage multiple priorities and deadlines with high attention to detail.  

  • Experience working with and engaging business, finance and public stakeholders on environmental issues. 

  • Experience of managing funded projects, including fundraising and reporting; experience with Global Environment Facility (GEF) funds and public-funded projects is a bonus. 

  • Knowledge of business and sustainability, environmental and/or social issues. 

  • Ability to work collaboratively and autonomously in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment. 

  • Excellent communication, networking and relationships building skills with an ability to influence and inspire others and collaborate with all people.  

  • A passion or interest in sustainable development and a belief that business can be a force for good. 

  • Highly motivated and proactive to lead and see-through projects from inception to completion, while bringing team members with them.  

  • Excellent English written and oral skills particularly to convey complex ideas and thoughts for a broad audience in a compelling and concise way. Other languages are a bonus.
