Nature at COP30 Advocacy Toolkit for business: put nature at the heart of climate action
Developed in collaboration with the We Mean Business coalition, the “Nature at COP30 Advocacy Toolkit for Business” outlines policy messages for companies to support an integrated nature and climate agenda at COP30.
The opportunity: COP in the Amazon rainforest
Hosted in Belém, on the edge of the Brazilian Amazon, the UN Climate COP30 presents a crucial opportunity to put nature at the heart of climate action. Key priorities include halting deforestation by 2030, expanding finance for adaptation and nature-based solutions and empowering indigenous stewardship.
The business case for integrating climate and nature
Climate change and nature loss are deeply interconnected. Tackling them together is crucial for resilient economies. For business, integrated action is a strategic imperative. It’s the key to managing risks, building resilience, cutting costs and driving innovation.
However, to scale these solutions, businesses require clear and integrated policy frameworks, supported by stable, coherent policies that link climate and nature are key to driving long-term investment and action.
There is now, therefore, an urgent need for businesses to advocate for ambitious integrated climate and nature policies.
The COP30 Advocacy toolkit
Developed in collaboration with the We Mean Business coalition, the Nature at COP30 Advocacy Toolkit for Business outlines policy messages for companies to support an integrated nature and climate agenda at COP30.
The toolkit is structured around 5 headline policy asks.
1. End deforestation and ecosystem loss:
Translate the Global Stocktake’s 2030 zero-deforestation and ecosystem degradation commitment into action by implementing a coherent set of national policies that address both the supply and demand sides of deforestation, while aligning legal, institutional, and corporate frameworks.
2. Strengthen Rio Convention synergies:
Align the implementation of the Rio conventions (Climate Change - UNFCCC, Biological Diversity - CBD, and Desertification - UNCCD), starting by adopting a COP30 decision to harness synergies.
3. Align and scale nature-positive finance:
Define clear pathways, solutions and milestones to increase public and private finance for nature-based solutions (NbS), including as part of the $1.3 trillion “Baku to Belém Roadmap”.
4. Increase focus on ecosystem-based adaptation:
Ensure that the Global Goal on Adaptation recognizes and embeds ecosystem-based adaptation as a core pillar of climate resilience to help businesses protect physical assets, reduce insurance costs, and stabilize supply chains, especially in climate-vulnerable regions.
5. Ensure inclusive governance and IP&LC engagement:
Support a just transition to a green economy by promoting Indigenous Peoples’ and community leadership in nature-based solutions (NbS) design and governance, expanding direct access to finance and enterprise development services, and supporting inclusive training programs.
We encourage all business representatives attending COP30 to incorporate the Toolkit’s messages into their engagement and speaking points ahead of and during COP30.
