From global to national: Business for Nature reveals updated 2030 strategy

Business for Nature is proud to launch our refreshed strategy to drive urgent progress toward a nature-positive economy for all.

Over the past five years we’ve helped unite businesses, partners and governments to elevate nature on the global agenda.

We’ve made significant progress, but the escalating nature crisis demands more. We need to go further, faster. That’s why Business for Nature, a global coalition of over 100 influential partner organizations as well as forward-thinking companies, is evolving.

There is no business without nature. Yet most companies continue to overlook it in their decision-making – despite an escalating ecological crisis that threatens $2.7 trillion in GDP losses annually by 2030. Today, only 5% of Fortune Global 500 companies have set biodiversity targets. Voluntary action is no longer enough. We need systemic change to embed nature at the core of corporate and government decisions.

Our collective mission: Together as the voice of leading business, we activate and accelerate the transition toward a nature-positive economy for all.

Sharpening our strategic focus

We recognize that lasting change must be rooted in national realities while influencing global frameworks. To drive ambitious advocacy, we will:

  1. Shape global and regional direction and;

  2. Enable national implementation.

These two strategic pillars strengthen and influence each other. Success stories of national implementation will be crucial to further strengthening our global and regional advocacy efforts, particularly through the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Through this two-pillar approach, we will continue to champion policies and practices that make protecting, restoring and sustainably using nature a sound business decision.

We’re excited to share Business for Nature’s refreshed strategy, developed in close collaboration with our partners. It builds on everything we’ve achieved together and puts us in a strong position to tackle the escalating nature crisis head-on. By sharpening our focus on national implementation while continuing to shape the broader global and regional direction, we’re accelerating the transition to a nature-positive economy. Together, we must ensure that nature is embedded at the heart of corporate and government decision-making – securing a thriving future for people, nature and business .

Our priorities for 2025–2026

To deliver on this strengthened strategy, we will focus on the following key priorities over the next two years:

  1. Focused national deep dives: We will work alongside our national partners to establish programs that foster business-government dialogues and identify critical policy levers to support the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework. Initial focus countries include Brazil, Chile, China, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa and Thailand.

  2. Global advocacy priorities: Together with key partners, we will co-lead efforts to push for:

    • Government-led, nature-positive sectoral pathways, providing clarity on how each sector can contribute to environmental goals.

    • Greater alignment between climate and nature agendas, ahead of, during and beyond COP30.

    • Redirection of harmful subsidies toward incentives that support a nature-positive economy.

  3. Ramp-up business strategies for nature: Through our growing partner network and the It’s Now for Nature campaign, we will continue to provide businesses with clear, consistent and actionable guidance to integrate nature into their strategies and transition plans.

  4. Collective roadmap to 2040: In collaboration with our partners, we will co-create and align around a shared vision for a nature-positive economy and explore trajectories to activate and accelerate the transition.

  5. Intentional business engagement at UN CBD COP17 and key moments in 2026: Building on lessons from COP15 and COP16, we will ensure strong business participation and impactful advocacy at COP17 and other key moments in 2026.

The need for action has never been clearer. Together, by embedding nature into the heart of economic and corporate decision-making, we can secure a thriving future for people, planet and business.
