Thousands of businesses are making commitments and taking action to reverse the loss of nature. But it’s not enough. Political leadership is needed.

The UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)’s Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (the Framework) adopted at the 15th Conference of Parties of the CBD in December 2022 in Montreal, Canada - kickstarts the transformation of our economic and financial systems.

When effectively implemented, it will help create a level playing field and a stable operating environment and unlock new business opportunities.

Many of the targets are relevant for businesses and financial institutions and must now be translated into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) to formalize the role of non-state actors and enable meaningful and constructive contributions to the implementation of the Framework.

Deep dive on Target 15

In Target 15, governments committed to require all large businesses and financial institutions to assess and disclose their risks, impacts and dependencies on nature in operations, value chains and portfolio

When updating NBSAPs…

To ensure that the role of business is fully recognized in the NBSAPs, Business for Nature developed eight recommendations for governments to consider
